VIDEO: iPhone video. Gabe Lopez solos over Tosin's "Prog" track for his 2016 AIMM entry demo. He saved up a year to purchase the Port City amp & cab. Sweet to see it in action. The final thing he does in the video is roll off the volume knob on the 3D control system. That guitar is an extension of him.
Tosin Abasi & AIMM are teaming up to offer a 2016 one year scholarship to the Atlanta Institute of Music & Media. This is a chance to intensively study and play guitar at a master class level. Hands on instruction. World class contacts and connections.
Going there will change your life.
It's really great to see Tosin giving back to the community, and to his roots. He's become an articulate spokesman for music education and reminder that reading, writing, and formal notation is an advantage.
I encourage you to apply. If you can make the time, take this risk.
I'm going to put in a vote and good word for Gabe Lopez. Gabe is special to me...I've loved his music from the moment I first heard him play. He is one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Absolutely real. Modest. Hardworking.
The three videos in this post will give you some idea of Gabe's growth as a player. Videos are listed sequentially, from bottom to top. We see him evolving from phrases of music into fully developed composition: "Infection Red" is a fully realized solo piece.
What I really like about Gabe's AIMM entry video is seeing his expansion into melodic improvisation. Fluid single note runs flow over the backing progression, building in speed and complexity. Throughout it all there is evidence of his growing technique mastery: subtle vibrato, bends, dynamics.
If Gabe wins this scholarship, it will be exciting to watch how his playing develops over the year.
Art happens in real time. Go make it happen.
