Mentioning 'beer' and 'oyster' in the same sentence is usually cause for celebration. Seldom have I met one of either species that did not warm the cockles o' me scurvy black pirate heart, and a delicious lip-smacking ensue.
Until I met oyster beer.
The very thought of combining the two, readily blended and bottled, seems either a high water mark of convenience, or anathema to civilized cuisine. Imagine sloughing those little critters off the half shell and stuffing their pulsing proboscene selves into the neck of a bottle. Gruesome, in a word.
And, yet. Who would have thought fermented bivalve mollusks could be so delicious?
Thanks for reaching out and showing love! Big fan of the guitar head bottle opener.
Good people drink good beer, and with the love you have for our Pearl Necklace, you are most definitely among the good.
Flying Dog Brewery
Flying Dog's Pearl Necklace is an inspired example of oyster beer. Not only does it exemplify the brewer's art, but proceeds from the sale are donated to restoring the oysters of Chesapeake Bay via Oyster Recovery Partnership. ORP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that plans, promotes and implements science-based and sustainable shellfish restoration, aquaculture and wild fishery activities to protect the environment, economy, and preserve cultural heritage of the Chesapeake.
As is so often the forked path in conservation, making something forbidden leads to poaching, whereas effective management leads to species or habitat recovery.
